Re: Batteries

First deep cycle batteries are best.

Here is a suggestion that may save you a few bucks. Interstate Batteries has a shop here in town. You see the trucks all the time. Approach a driver of an Interstate Battery truck and ask him/her about "Blemished" batteries.

Interstate sells the blemished batteries for about 25% of the price but w/o any warranty. I will tell you these batteries are fine and work perfect.

Fo a 48 lb thrust trolling motor ....... if it is wired for 12 volts it should last you a whole day of fishing unless it is your primary propulsion then it will last less. My last trolling motor was wired for 12 V and I used 2 batteries and have a crossover switch installed. You can go with less wiring and just swap batteries while fishing.

Added to the cost of a battery (or two) is a good quality marine charger too.

Re: Batteries

A group 27 deep cycle is sufficient for your needs. The numbers to look for however, is the "Reserve Minutes" which is printed on the label. These numbers are something like this: Reserve Capacity: 145@20A load

This means the battery will operate a 20 amp load for 145 minutes or nearly 2-1/2 hours. Your 48# motor will draw about 42 amps at full speed but few people actually run them at that speed continuously. So while those numbers may seem like rather short run time, at slower settings that battery should last a full day or nearly so. The key is to find a battery that has the highest reserve minutes. Not all group 27 (or any other group) have the same reserve capacity.
