What battery do you guys recommend for this engine? Can I run it with any car battery?

I have in the past with no problems but now I need a new battery. I have a spare car battery laying around but am unsure if the amperage is too high. These numbers are a little higher than the battery I used to have.
Cold Cranking Amps - 800
Cranking Amps @ 32degF - 1000
Reserve Capacity - 110

Thanks for the Advice.

Re: Battery Advice

Just about any group 24 Marine starting battery will do fine. You want to use a Marine battery if funds permit because it will withstand to abuse a little better. A bigger battery won't hurt the motors starter unless you are cranking it excessively. The bigger battery would allow you to crank longer and possibly burn up the starter but if the motor starts and runs normally it won't be an issue. The numbers you have for your car battery are fine and it will work but may not last with all the vibration and bouncing around it will get.

also if the battery is not maintenance free (sealed) make sure you put it in a battery box, to contain any spillage. just in case.

I was looking at Marine batteries at Auto Zone Monday and they have 800 cold cranking amps as well.

Re: Battery Advice

800cca would be overkill on that motor.....depends on the amount of accessories you want to run with it as well.....you could get away with about 600cca, about 700cca would be ideal and still have enough in reserve for the usual extras.....yes, you can use an auto battery but the plates are not built as robustly as a marine type so keep in mind it may fail at some stage.

Re: Battery Advice

Any battery of 'cheapest' sort with a high internal leakage (not sealed) should work. Engines without a proper charge regulator have problems building too high voltage when using newer types maint. free batteries.
