I am very new to boating and learning more with each day. I recently purchased a 1971 Larson Tri Hull. It is in great condition with motor (Johnson 85hp) in good working order. I want to secure the battery. I see that there are battery cases that resemble a plastic box or a plastic frame that the battery is placed into. Does it matter which of these I should use? I understand that if I use the "open face" plastic frame then I need to cover the terminals with a plastic terminal covers. Can I screw the frame or box (whichever I use) directly into the deck? The deck is mostly covered with marine grade carpet.

Welcome to iBoats!

Yes most any Battery box will work
Treat your terminal with any good anti corrosive treatment and you will be fine. I make a paste from Baking soda and water and coat mine. Works Great!

I recommend Battery Box tie downs like this.

Make sure to pre-drill your holes, fill them with epoxy and while the epoxy is still wet install the screws. This way the holes will not allow water to intrude into the wood and start the rotting process.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Woodonglass...will the Marine Store have the epoxy you reference? I plan to drill holes slightly smaller than the screws to be used...will this give enough area for the epoxy to set??

Just get some 5 minute epoxy at wal-Mart.
Use a toothpic to put it in the holes and coat the screw threads too!
