I just installed a new powerpack and 3 coils on my 1991 70 hp Johnson It was going in to slow mode some time. I ran boat it ran great no more SLOW, But battery is barely charging according to the gauge.

1.Can I trust the gauge?
2. How can I test to see if the battery is charging correctly?
3. Is this related to the powerpack change?

Re: Battery Charging ???

You don't say what type gauge you are using (voltage or amp). A simple test is to hook a volt meter to the battery. Check the reading before starting, then check it again after starting. You won't see much of a rise until you get to 2K rpm and higher so its best to do this in the water as muffs don't provide enough cooling at higher RPMs. Voltage should go up to 13V or more depending on the state of the battery. This will also tell you if your gauge is working properly.
