Battery charging

I have heard different opinions on what is the best way to charge a deep cycle battery to prolong its life. I have been using a 2 amp trickle charger that I leave on for about 3 days. While doing it this way, am I getting a fully charged battery? I had one battery that didn't last very long when I used a 15 amp charger. Battery got warm (not hot). I know that the higher the amperage you put back into the battery, it will heat or cook the plates causing a corrosion on the plates, thus reducing the output of the battery. Does this make sense? Thanks for your input.... :)

Re: Battery charging

Batteries are simple but doing the wrong things can substantually decrease the life of the battery. Batteries typically die because of poor maintenance...sulphation of the plates. Sulphation occurs when the battery is dicharged and not recharged soon enough and the sulpher/sulpheric acid in the battery attaches to the plates/lead. It also sulphates quickly when the water gets low and exposes the plates. The object is to replace the charge as soon as possible and keep it fully charged to get the most out of the battery.

Here is a link to a great page that will give you most all of the information you will need to maintain your batteries.
Battery Stuff
