Battery Charging

Can I charge my two deep cycle batteries at the same time (12 V system) by plugging a charger adapted with the same type of plug as the trolling motor into the same outlet that the trolling motor plugs into? Will that have the same effect as hooking a charger directly to the batteries individually, except for maybe charging a little slower? I have a 2003 17' Smokercraft with the trolling motor panel on the bow with a 4 prong plug (2 wires)

Re: Battery Charging

Thanks for your reply Schematic, but I guess my real question is if this will actually work going backwards through the trolling motor wiring without damaging the batteries or the wiring or anything else for that matter.

Re: Battery Charging

boy, i get tired of giving kudos to schematic.... ;) all i can say is, if you hung around, and watched/listened you'd know that schem will never give you a BS answer.

but :D since you axed - no, if you are worried about "backcharging" through the same wires - it is not a problem. remember- a wire just conducts the charge - either way. so whatever you pull on one end means you can push back the other way. and a bad situation probably reaches close to 20amps. you can charge your batteries through that connection, just don't expect the cabling to handle jumpstarting thru there. go directly to the battery posts for that :D

and if you have a 12v trolling motor, then the 2 batteries have a parallel connection, and you can charge them both at one time.

Re: Battery Charging

Thanks Ebb, my main concern was not to screw up anything by charging that way. As far as the jumpstarting through those wires is not a concern as there is a third battery for the motor and electronics. I appreciate your input so now I don't have to keep peeking out at the garage to make sure it isn't burning down while the charger is plugged in.
