battery cut out

I have an old merc black max. Its 175HP and hanging on my bass boat.
I notice all my friends with new boats have a switch that is flipped to the open positon thus killing all power to the boat and motor.
Not a bad idea as I have accidently left live wells on and once I had the motor trim up going down the highway.

I got to thinking I could simply use a continous duty solennoid for this job.

my question is would 85 amps be enough? If I were breaking the + cable on the battery how would 85 amp hold up when cranking the motor?

anyone?

thanks Jim

Re: battery cut out

Jim A starter takes 150 A or more, so your solenoid will not hold up.

You also do not need to route the starter cables thru a master switch/solenoid. You really want to just kill the power to the accessories, not the motor. The ign key is the master shut off for the motor. Remember to leave power to the auto bilge pump switch.

Re: battery cut out

The ignition key is the master for the motor and instruments, but it doesn't kill the trim or accessories. There are many varieties of battery cut off switches on the market. They are simple, high current ON-OFF switches that are placed at the positive terminal of the battery thus killing all power. Your solenoid idea is not a realistic one as mentioned.

Re: battery cut out

as it is now there are a few wires about 12 ga on the positive side of the battery. Those wires the live wells and such. They are fused at the fuse box. maybe my solution is a toggle switch and relay to power the fuse box?
