Maybe some one can help here. I repalced my altenator,65 amp, Replace the battery with a Duel purpose. My problem comes when I am cruseing and I use the trim tabs or the outdrive trim. When I use them ,not all at the same time, the boat will loose all foward motion like you hit a sand bar, then when you stop use either one the boat goes right back to cruseing speed like nothing ever happen. Would a higher output altenator help this probelm? I do not remember the boat ever doing this before replaceing the altermator. the new alt charges at 14 volts steady.
the boat is a 96 seaswirl, with a volvo penta 5.0L fi

Re: battery draw

You have a loose connection somewhere that is causing a voltage drop to your ignition.

Re: battery draw

Best thing to do is to use a meter and make measurements relative to the ground post on the battery while someone operates the trim.

You need to measure the grounds too. For example, with one lead on the negative post of the battery measure the ground at the ignition. You should measure 0V. If you have a resistive connection there you could read much higher.

If the grounds look good, do the same for +12V. Keep one lead on the negative again and measure the voltage at the ignition. You can then work your way backwards.

Since the ignition gets its power from the battery, through a breaker at the engine, through the large connector back at the engine, up to the dash, through the ignition switch, through the kill switch, back through the engine connector and on to the ignition module, there are many places that you need to check.

You have a service manual that shows a schematic of the electrical? You are going to have a tough time doing this without it.

Re: battery draw

ok thanks for the info, now I have a place to start. I do have a repair manual with the wiring in it. I will look in there.

Re: battery draw

ok here is what I did. I Changed the way the battery was connected, I placed the battery cables to the battery posts and left the smaller electronics to the nutted post. I also disconected the ground wire to the motor and cleaned it. I also checked the with an meter the resitance in the battersy cable and acrooss the batter switch that part passed with no resitance anywere. the changeing of the way the battery is conneced and cleaning the ground worked. That is the update. Thanks for your help.
