Re: Battery Help

You should be able to get battery information from the Mercury web site. Be sure to get at least the specified cca. Exceeding it a bit is ok also, it's just extra money invested in a bigger battery.

Get a name-brand, dependable battery. Unlike a car, you can call AAA or walk to the nearest gas station for assistance.

Re: Battery Help

Despite the arguments between Deep cycle and starting batteries, I would go with a deep cycle as long as it exceeds the needed cranking amps for you motor. I think the recommended CCA's are listed in the front of the Mercury manuals. I don't have my manual in front of me now or I would tell you what they recommend.

Re: Battery Help

You need a Group 24, Marine Grade, Starting/Cranking Battery. CCA should be between 600 and 800. Don't use a deep cycle because your engines charging circuit won't be able to recover it from long periods of cranking should that ever happen.

Deep cycle batteries are designed for one thing and that is powering ancillary devices. Pulling them down below 60% may damage them and although they can be used for cranking the manufacturers usually recommend that it only be done in an emergency.

I use Interstate batteries, 1 group 24 starting and 2 group 27 deep cycles setup for 24v. I also use a Pro Mariner 20amp tripple battery onboard charger that charges the starting battery at a different rate than the deep cycles. It takes around 12 hours to bring the deep cycles back fully after running the 65lb trolling motor and accessories for a day while fishing. It only takes about 20minutes to top off the starting battery.
