Battery hookup

Ok, new here, but have a question. I feel really stupid right now. I was not thinking. I have a 2005 225BR Bayliner. Today went to hook up the wires to the battery, and made a mistake. I have 2 yellow wires. Both of them hook up to the negative post of the battery. I absentmindedly hooked one to positive and one to negative. Negatve nut got real hot and the one hooked to the positive started melting a couple wires in the wire harness. SO yes I screwed up. My question is In doing that, does anyone have any idea if I did a whole lot of damage or hopefully just a few melted wires? Thanks..t

Welcome to IBaots.

You a going to have to replace the damaged wire sections. The only way to find out how much damage is done, is to test the wires with an OHM tester. You'll have to test each wire and inspect the wires for damage.

Agree, you most likely just have to fix your melted wires.

testing with an ohm meter isn't going to cut it. You could have one strand left and it would test OK.

Re: Battery hookup

You shorted out the batteries.
It is highly unlikely that any damage was done to any of the electronics beyond the damaged battery cables and and anything else that hot cables damaged.

Any wiring with even slightly melted insulation is suspect.
If the insulation became hot enough to melt, the wire inside became hot enough that it may have hardened the wire and it is now brittle.
You may find wires and connectors breaking from the vibration of the engine.

Take your medicine and replace anything that even looks slightly damaged.
It is going to be way cheaper than the Towing Bill.
