battery losing charge

My boat battery failed me the other day. It is only month old, low hours. I could not get it to turn the motor over. I had boatUS come over and give me a jumper pack to hook onto the battery and it worked fine. Is it okay to run the boat and use the jumper pack when needed to avoid costly espenses on the motor charging system?

Re: battery losing charge

Your starting battery won't last under these conditions.Find the problem and have it fixed. It will save you money and grief in the long run.

Jim

Re: battery losing charge

what does your voltage read on your gauge when the boat is running? are you charging 2 batteries,1 battery? if your not reading 13 or more volts you have a charging problem.."alternator first".. there are many posts in here regarding voltage or charging problems... you should cycle through "electrical" and this forum here any many of your questions will be answeredluck...
there are many guys in here who know there poop!!lol.. read around... good luck..

Re: battery losing charge

Was motor charging the previous battery OK (up until that battery got too old)? If yes, then why wouldn't motor charge now, what changed? Hmmm - put in new battery! Check simple things first before $pending unnece$$arily. Make sure connections at battery are clean and tight. New battery installation could have left bad or high resistance connection between battery posts and cable terminals. Easy to tell with a voltmeter if you have one and know how; otherwise, just remove terminals, clean both posts and terminals, then tightly reinstall cable terminals on posts.

Re: battery losing charge

Here is another thought. This comes straight from my evinrude manual. If the battery has set for 30 days it should be recharged to full capcity before taking it out.
