Battery question

So I had a mishap when installing my trolling motor battry. The wrench touched both terminals and welded the nut to the threaded post in the battery. Now the whole post spins with the nut. Are the posts replaceable? And can it be removed by unscrewing it with the nut. The battery is measuring 13 volts so I think it is fine but I am not sure.

I have cut the cable and removed the battery for precautionary reasons.

any help is appreciated

Thinking you need another battery myself. That's one piece of a boat I'd rather not be worried about every time I used it.

Post a picture of how you battery looks. And you are extremely lucky.

My boss, decades ago, did the same thing tightening his battery connection up and got his ring caught between the terminal and the wrench. Instant glowing heat on the ring, and so his reaction was to pull away quickly. But his finger was stripped to the bone of his skin by then. Very bad situation that took so very long to heal right... It does happen when you least suspect it!

Here it is. The 3/8 post turns inside the large lead just like a bolt would

You can't fix that, buy a new one.

In future, lay a rag over one terminal while tightening the other, then switch.
Then cover the posts.

Don't use that post, add something like this and go boating, just don't use the wing nuts, replace with nuts

If the main lug the round male one doesn’t move in the battery do exactly what was stated in the above response do make sure no liquid is seeping from the area where the lead comes out if the plastic. Should be fine I’ve seen customers car batteries where they have arch welded the lug so much 1/3 of it was gone.

Nope,..... That stud is cast into the lead,......

AD shows you the bandaid work-around,......

I'd do the band aid above and go boating! And as someone else mentioned, you got very, very lucky. It could just have easily welded the wrench, at which point the battery would have gone into meltdown mode and probably exploded soon after, showering everything with acid &/or fire.

Doesn't really apply in boats, but there is a reason the negative post is the first and last part of a car battery that you touch.

Can you not remove the nut and broken wire terminal end then re tap that post enough to get a post extension on it? Only need about 4 threads I would think. I have post extensions on my cranking battery as I ran a few electronics with inline fuses to it.
