I've been trying to read up a lot on batteries, but I'm pretty new to the outboard motors with batteries. I've purchased a Chrysler 55 HP motor, and the guy I bought it from was using a 12 volt battery. So I've been reading about batteries that are used mainly for startup, and batteries for long running things like trolling motors. I'm not really sure what one would be best for me though because I will need a good battery for the startup, and then I am planning on using this motor for trolling (until I can get the money for an electric trolling motor) so at first I thought that I would just go with a car battery for the startup, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to go since I will be trolling with the motor as well. Any thoughts?

I don't think it would ever be a good idea to use the same battery for running an electric trolling motor and then starting your outboard. If I were you, I'd get a marine starting battery for the Chrysler, and a deep cycle when you get your electric trolling motor.

By they way, definitely keep your eye on craigslist for trolling motors. Lots of great deals there. I scored a sweet bow mount one for my boat for $75.

Re: Battery Style

i wouldnt use a car battery for any marine application, they are not built for the abused of the marine environment. for running your 55hp motor just use a starting battery, as when ur trolling u would be burning fuel. once you add your electric trolling motor, i would add a deep cycle battery. the only thing is u cannot use ur outboard motor to charge both batteries it doesnt put out enough amps. so the easiest and cheapest way, is to buy a home charger, and a deep cell battery and after every trip you use it hook it up to the charger. or even better u can get an inboat charger so u dont have to remove the battery from the boat, and for a few bux more u can get a dual bank charger so u can charge both batteries at the same time and plug it in via an extension cord.

this is all assuming you trailer ur boat to and from whatever source of water you use.

Concur, get a marine starting battery, it will only use power when you are starting the engine otherwise as Relikk said you are burning gas not battery.

And when you do get a trolling motor plan on getting deep cylce battery for it, if you run the troller on the starting battery you will find you trolled a bit to long and the engine won't start.

Thanks so much for the replies. This definitely makes me feel more comfortable with what I need to do.

Re: Battery Style

I have gone many years using dual purpose batteries for starting big outboards and running a troller for positioning while casting. I don't remember ever having the battery (Wal Mart Everstart Marine Maxx) fail to do what I wanted when I wanted it.

If you plan on really trolling for extended time by all means get a deep cycle battery for that purpose alone and have a seperate Marine starting battery for your outboard. If you do that you will also need to make arrangements for charging the troller battery between uses.

Re: Battery Style

If I understand right you will be using the Chrysler for trolling initionally, probably not the best choice,
Some Chryslers have an automotive type igntion using the battery so you need to be sure the motor will charge the battery at trolling speed. If it does a good marine battery is all you need.
If you post your question in the Chrysler section regarding the charge rate when trolling you may get more help. Some of the Chryslers have magneto ignition so the charge rate won't matter.
