Battery wiring question

New to the forum. I have sailboat and larger cruiser experience. This is my first bass boat....of of which i am blissfully ignorant as to whats proper.

I have a Crestliner CXVX 182 with a 115 HP Evinrude.

There are 2 deep cycle batteries that are wired as 24 v configuration and wired only to the trolling motor.

There is 1 regular battery used to start the motor, run 2 fish finders, a VHF radio, bilge pump, livewell pump, stereo, nav lights.

I prefer to have the start battery used to only start the motor. If i wire all the other items to ONE of the deep cycles....will i get 12v or 24 v output?

Any other solutions welcome.

The deep cycles are charged by a 110v 2 stage pro charger

The starting battery is charged by the motor.

Thx in advance for the help

Re: Battery wiring question

Wiring the accessories to the 1st battery that is grounded to the engine should give you 12v. while (+) off the 2nd battery would still give you the
24v.

Don't have experience with that system so I'm not sure if that would be your best option,

I'm sure there will be experienced opinions better than mine that will follow.

Re: Battery wiring question

Right, one battery = 12V, two in series = 24V. And like previously mentioned I'd use the deep cycle that has the negative wired to the - of the trolling motor, not the one that has the negative tied to the other battery's positive.

Although in reality both would give you 12V. voltage has no meaning unless there are two points referenced together... So even though the second battery's negative termimal is at +12V referenced to the first battery's negative, it's 12V lower with respect to it's positive terminal.

Tha being said... If youre so uncertain about this that you're not sure if you'll be getting 12V or 24V... I'd go to walmart a get a $15 multimeter and learn to use it.

good luck,

Re: Battery wiring question

Good tip on the multi-meter... That being said if you wire to just one of the batteries that is in series, i.e. use only its (+) and (-) terminals you will have 12V.
