i read the site: http://www.windsun.com/Batteries/Battery_FAQ.htm#Major Battery Types ..........now my little brain is smoking...... being an auto mech i always bought the biggest battery i could find/afford that would fit in place.

i looked up the stator for my '79 115 johnson in question and it has a 10amp stator.

ive read that its is reccomended that a battery of 60-90amp hour should be used for starting or a switch to turn off the battery conn (since it is unregulated and doesnt have to be hooked to battery to run), i cant afford the switch now that i bought a full tank of gas for the boat. and also that a 350-400 ca is reccomended.

ive also read that these motors need a high leakage battery.

ive already replaced the rectifier once probably due to the crappy battery i was running in it for a while, and dont want to buy another and cant afford a stator.

i have a everstart maxx dual purpose marine with 875 ca ,reserve 205, part # maxx 29 (is this the group?).......and a everstart maxx car 825 ca, 690 cca, part # maxx 75n.the car battery is back up right now......i couldnt find anything about a group # on either....both are about a moth old.

what i want to do is put the marine up front and use the car battery to start.

do i have the right car battery to do this or is it too large?

is my marine battery too large for this application also?....i got a big one cause i like my trolling motor.

sorry about the book, youd think bein an auto mech i could understand but im confused.

thanks for the help guys.

Re: battery

for the last 45 years i have used the same starting battery in my boat that fit the tow vehicle. worked out great on long weekends, especially back when i had a stick shift truck. the marine will be fine for the troller. just recharge it after every use, the do not like being low on charge.

Re: battery

so its not as big a deal to use a high CA car battery as im making it out in my paranoid brain?

the reason i want to put the dual purpose up front is because i think my troller wires a crystalized ,due to the fact they are gettin hot.... i have a cheap pair of jumper cables ,the wife bought thinkin she was doin good bless her heart, that im gonna use to rewire my troller... they arent long enough to reach the back but should give plenty of juice up close.

although i did like the idea of having a fully charged battery for back up the troller is more important this weekend....provide the reminance of ike doesnt ruin it for me.

thanks tashasdaddy!

p.s. im a dog lover too and that is a beautiful dog!

Re: battery

You probably won't get the same battery answers twice on this forum, but most will agree that with unregulated chargers, the bigger the battery the better. In the absence of a regulator, the larger battery will act as a kind of regulator in its own right.

The specifications for different batteries such as the Optima batteries sold here at iboats will often tell you not to use them on unregulated chargers.

Most will tell you that dual purpose deep cycle batteries are for any application whereas starting batteries are strictly for starting:

I use nothing but large dual purpose deep cycle marine batteries because of their ability to withstand multiple cycles of discharge/recharge and to carry a fairly large accessory load. My typical battery is in the range of 650 cca, not mca. I keep the batteries on trickle charge between trips and recharge them monthly in the winter, stored inside.

One thing that I have never had a problem with is batteries.
I keep them four years, then give them to the kids for the trolling motors.

BTW, I used a battery like your Everstart as the primary on my 1976 115 for four years with no problems. I don't think you have to worry about overcharging that battery with the motor.
