I am new to boating and have a project boat I would like some help on. It is a late 80's Renken with a Volvo Penta 4 Cyl. It has no battery and I wanted to know where it is supposed to be wired too as there are no battery cables either. Thanks.

Re: Battery

I would suggest a manual to be sure you are doing it right. That is what I would consider a critical job to get correct.Charlie

Re: Battery

I agree with Charlie all the way. Bad things happen when wired wrong. I got a factory service manual for my OMC off of evilbay(eb**). I gave 40.00 for it. You could try a Volvo/Penta dealer also.

Re: Battery

The Seloc manual probably has more information for a beginner than the OEM Volvo manuals. I'm a Volvo certified tech, and just bought one to see what was in it.
But to tell you the truth, if you aren't mechanically inclined enough to know how to hook up a battery to the engine/starter, then a Volvo 4 cylinder with an outdrive an all that's involved in keeping and getting one running is not going to be possible in my opinion. But I wish you luck in trying.

Re: Battery

Go to the public library and look for the Seloc manual and check it out. You might have to have it look at by a Volvo certified tech. Could be a bit more complicated than you think. But by all means give it a try. Good Luck.

Re: Battery

I have no problem at all hooking this all up, as far as being mechanically inclined i am an aviation electrician and a certified motorcycle mechanic, however anyone who is afraid to ask questions no matter how silly it seams should not be working around motors. What I have is a motor with rednecked wiring that isn't running and i was wondering if anyone had a diagram to post while I am waiting for the manual to come in.

Re: Battery

I can only speak to my boat, but the positive goes to the starter post, and the negative goes to the engine block.

All corresponding wiring i.e... 12 volt + feeds and grounds all tie in at these two points.

Since your harness is "rednecked" you may have to do some tracing. I was able to do so by getting a wire diagram from my local library. I believe Clymers printed the book "Boat Wiring Diagrams" I believe was the name. Seloc also has wiring diagrams in the back of the book.

Re: Battery

Good to know thanks for the help, as for my wiring harness it was thrown to Davy Jone's locker. It was so rednecked there was no saving her. I don't think any trons could have found there way around that without a map. I will be building the harness and all from the beginning and following ABYC wiring schemes. Don't want to be trying to catch trons with my fishing net now.

While I don't like to slam anyone, I have to say to please be careful if you buy anything from Horne's Salvage Marine. This place is a true "junkyard" of boat parts. If you know exactly what you need, and verify IN PERSON that what they have is indeed what you need, and is in WORKING CONDITION, then fine. DO NOT TAKE THEIR WORD OVER THE PHONE.
