Bay Boats: Best bang for the buck?

I'm looking at getting a bay boat within the next 6 months or so.

I'm looking to spend in the 13-15k range for at least an 18ft boat, center console, galv. trailer, etc.

I've been looking at the kenner boats, and they say that they have a lifetime warranty on the hull. This seems to be a good deal.

I was looking at their 180v90 that comes with a 90hp merc, stainless prop, galv trailer, baitwell, rear casting deck,etc.. It's selling for 13995 brand new.

I currently have an old 1968 chrysler commando, and it isn't much for the flats. I do have a 1995 nissan 90hp on it that runs like a champ though. However, I need something a little larger and something that can get into a little skinnier water.

Thanks for any advice!
Shawn

Were you also thinking of building a Phantom 22 from www.bateau2.com ? Seems I remember that?
-John

John,

Yea, I was (I have the plans, as well as the OD18 plans). I am about to start school really heavy again...and building is almost ruled out (for now, but I WILL build one eventually).

If I can't find a reasonably priced boat that I like, I will end up going ahead and building one anyways...it will just take longer then I would like.

Shawn

Shawn,

If you plan to do nothing other than fishing flats and protected bays-fine. Otherwise forget it.

I had a 19' Palm Beach Baydancer and hated it. Anything over a one foot chop made the ride miserable. Wet and bone jarring.

Seems like there are a zillion bay boats on the market today. But few of them are cheap. For your budget a skiff might get you more bang-for-the-buck.

Kelly Cook
