Morgan,

I'm not an expert on Bayliners but I think that era was the problem prone one that gave Bayliners a really bad name. The Force motors also have a bad reputation for that era.

Keep reading the threads on bayliners and make a informed decision.

Good luck.

1985 Capri, that a 19ft cuddy cabin?, my nieghbor has a 17ft w a 85hp force, his boat seems ok, to me I personaly would not purchase it with a force engine, if memory serves 1985 was the first of the force engine, in 1984 it was chrysler, chrysler had problems and sold of there outboard motor divison and it realy never became a player in the industry. Those motors just do not come close to that same year merc of johnson, the boat itself will tell its own tale, it is 19 years old, check the floor, any soft spots, check the transom, after 19 years any defects in the fabrication of the hull would show by now.

You will find alot of people on this board do not like bayliner, I have no problem with them, never owned one but know many people who have and they all liked them.

Re: Bayliner 1985

I have an 1985 14 foot Bayliner with a 50hp force. When I got it the boat itself was in fine shape, but the motor needed work.

I put about 10 hours and 150 bucks into the motor and it runs good. I think the problem most have with Force is that they are unreliable.

I have decided to sell and replace the motor due to it's less than reliable reputation. If the motor was taken care of perfectly and has good compression then it may be ok for you. Just plan on putting money and time into it, because you won't find anyone willing to work on it.

I just put new carpet and upholstery in the boat. I may need your advice later on for fiberglassing. Check my post "transom support", there are pictures.

My advice is stay away from the force but the bayliner may be ok.

Re: Bayliner 1985

I have no firsthand personal knowledge of Bayliners other than knowing that a guy at work had his get swamped (wave broke over the transom) and it sank out from under him like a rock, so fast they had no time to put on life preservers or do anything like call for help. Good thing for them there were others also fishing in the immediate area (8 mi. offshore, water more than a mile deep) who picked them up right away. Don't know if that's an indictment of all Bayliners (his was a 26 or 28 footer - not req'd to have level flotation?), but note that the Coast Guard lists three pages of recalls on Bayliner, just official recalls not all problems. Go to the link below, enter Bayliner in the box for company name, then look for your prospective boat, and make up your own mind.
http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/recalls_database.htm

Re: Bayliner 1985

Thanks for the information. the only thing i found on the USC site was a anti siphon valve recall. The boat is a 19 foot bowrider. I checked compression on it today and all four cylinders were between 75-80 lbs. the top of the boat does have some gell coat cracks and the transom had been repaired recently. i did notice that the storage in the deck did hold water after a recent rain storm. is the drain tube connected to anything or just plugged? i did not find a bilge pump on the boat anywhere. any suggestions for installing one? the main purpose is pleasure, tubing, carying 2-4 adults and 2-3 children. floor is soft in spots and will probobly be repaired/replaced this winter.

again, thank you for any help and or advise

75-80? Should be closer to or over 100 psi I'd imagine. Did you already buy this? You might want to reconsider the Bayliner/Force combo.....

It doesn't look like the Force is with you on this one. Broke down on the water sucks. It is not like you can get out and walk.

Nothing more embarrassing than getting a tow in a junky boat. I know from experience.

Re: Bayliner 1985

As a happy 'older' Bayliner owner, my 1990 Capri suffers from none of the problmes you've mentioned...you really need to look for something else. Even if the boat were free, you'll be putting lots of money in repairs very soon. Seriously. Ever check out the Boats for sale section here, or at boattraderonline.com? There are lots and lots of afforable used boats listed. Why do all that work when you can start out with a boat in much better shape for the same money you'll spend fixing this one?
