Hi guys....Bayliner 3555. Have 2 dead carbed 350's, dead alpha 1's. I can rebuild the 350's easily, but for a 11,000 lb. boat, engine swap a better idea? Looking for inexpensive & best economy with today's fuel prices, plan on 100 mile trips, etc........ stoker 383, 400, 7.4, diesel conversion??? I'm a mechanic, my labor is free...any thoughts? looking for cheap ideas...thanx

Relatively speaking, cheapest is probably replacing what you have with the same basic stuff, just rebuilt or remanned. The boat will not be a speed demon anyway so attempting to upgrade power to the degree that it will make any difference is probably money not well spent. The 5.7 carbed engines can provide good torque for acceleration and cruising. Going with what you already have will eliminate most of the surprises of trying to adapt in non-standard components. From what I can tell there are many good options for longblock 5.7's and remanned or new Alpha replacements.

Just replace what you got, you will never save enough fuel to even come close to the cost of any conversion.
