Bayliner Capri / Force 90hp, is it a deal?

I am considering purchasing a '90 Bayliner Capri with a 90hp Force motor, and am wondering if it's a decent deal, or does it sound like I'm over my head. The boat is in decent condition, with typical wear/sun damage for it's age, but the motor runs rough and stalls after it's warmed up. The seller has taken it to several mechanics who have done basic maintenance like plugs and a carb rebuild. How can I check the motor more closely to know how severe this problem is (ie. compression check, plug read, etc.) Also the seal behind the prop seemed to be leaking gear lube. How hard is that to change, how can I check the bearings (ie. prop end play side to side and fore and aft)? He's asking $2000 for the boat, trailer, and a 90lb thrust trolling motor and fish finder; or $1500 without the trolling motor and fish finder. The hull seemed pretty good overall, but on the fore part of the keel, the gelcoat was scraped just down to the fiberglass (looks like it was beeched a couple times). Thoughts?

I could make this a long post, but won't.
The engine has troubles now, and the mechanics haven't been able to fix it.
Plus there are the unknowns you mentioned, and some more you haven't.
Hull, stringers, transom, lower unit, stator, compression, carbs, rings, pistons, heads, waterpump, wiring, tilt/trim, etc.

i'd stay away from it! there's plenty of boats out there in that price range that dont have problems.

the best day I ever had with my Force outboard was the day some fool stole it! I hope he had as much trouble with it as I did. Run, don't walk away unless you are willing to repower.

Mcstale - Sounds like I have the same boat/motor combination, except mine is an 1989 model. I bought mine in 1993 and have had very good luck with it. It sounds like that one has seen better days though. I'd stay away from it If I were you.

Jeff

I would say run also ... I did happen to see a disabled force this past weekend at the gas docks, which was not on a bayliner, but then i did see a bayliner that the owner had changed the name to BAGLINER on the side of the boat.

as with any boat there are bound to be problems.
you can get it and have it repaired, then you will know what you have got.
-
bayliners & force motors have gotten bad reps due to being an entry level boat combo.
they needed tlc which an enrty boater seems to disreguard, therefore you have breakdowns & problems.
-
but do keep in mind that when you take on a project boat its going to cost to get it up to par.
my 2k boat project is now well over 7k to 8k, and its still sitting in the yard.
ive seen some decent deals for under 3k so keep looking unless you like to gamble.
