Just bought my first bayliner ever. It s a 1990 capri 175o the seller told me. Only 2 owner before me and in a very good shape. But. This boat has a engine set up i have never seen before!!! It has a 90 hp force outboard engine mounted innboard with the lower gear and prop mounted underneeth. Hydral. tilt.Never ever seen somthing like this. What type is my boat? Is this Factory made? There are almost no force engine s over here and nobody knows anything abaout them. I am a mekanic as profesian. And to me the engine looks to be an very old construction.. Is this a good set up? What should i take spesial note of to prevent future damage? Where do i get parts for it? etc. Need a new exos hous and the plastik rubberbetveen the engine mount plate and lower gear .

Thanks Lage

Welcome, Your boat is what they call an L drive. It is a factory built boat.
Unfortunately not very successful. If it is working for you and you have a mechanic that understands it; take good care of it.These have driven
good amature mechanics crazy and usually result in failure. Try to get yourself a factory service manual. And keep on top of things.Parts probably ebay is as goodc as any. Some of the L drive guys may post with some help.
Drive line parts especially need regular maintenance.
If its presently working well I would sell it and get a more mainline setup.
Sorry I can't be more incourging.

Re: Bayliner capri tip needed in Norway

Welcome to iboats!

The old L drive did not do too well and was obsolete in a short time. Parts are very hard to get, even in the US. If its working, use it. As soon as it breaks, strip the boat, dump it and go buy a boat without an L drive. But don't spend good money on it.

Even worse than the lack of parts for the L drive, the hull can't even take an outboard motor without extensive modifications.

The good news is you have come to the right place for any help you may need with the repairs.

I think ebay is the primary source of parts for L drive motors.

Thanks fore reply. I think it s a cind of a rear boat with this engine set up. But i dont like the thought of not getting parts fore it. Is it the engine ore the lower unit who is the main problem on this type? What did the problems use to be? Is there any firm s who has parts fore them?
I managed to get a used lover unit for a force outboard and a complete inginiton system for this engine in a boat yard. Just to have some spears.... If good forbid it breaks....

Serius? Should i just get rid of it when it stills runs? The boat is a 2 owner, always garaged and has perfekt interior and outside...... Looks almost new....

I believe the problems are mostly with the lower unit. The powerhead is same as what was used on an outboard. Parts for the L drive are hard to find and not available aftermarket (that I know of) .

If its running good, then keep it well maintained and you can probably get a few years out of it.

As I recall there are parts specific to the power head that modify it for L drive performance.Unfortunately I'm nat able to be more specific.
I do know the some folks have speent a lot of time on the drive line.
Universals, bearings, etc. You might try a search here using L drive in various combinations. Then of course there is the fact that Force in general has been out of production since the late 90s the L drive longer. There is no Force specific new part production today.Other than generic parts like ignition cooling and fuel systems.
