Merry Christmas to those who Are into it and Merry Christmas to those who dont ! o:)

... my boat is all stored up and it'll be warm tommorow :(. this is a new boat to me but I believe it's mid 80's with what looks like a bayliner engine controlls (blue and silver b's ??). the last time we went out the N moved forward on the controll. Normally a Red button is depressed and the controll can then be moved F or R the N lock no longer works and the acutual N position is a bit forward now like instead of N being 12 o'clock high N is now at 10:30. The first few times out this was a NON issue. This is the type of controll that will "choke" the engine by pulling the whole thing away from the mount and it disengages the Shifting Cable. (so you can pump the throttle only) if that gives you more of an idea of what I have. The boat shifts smoothly and I can achieve Wide Open Throttle. When looking at the lower unit (with the cover off) the shifter arm moves in it's 3 positions. So everything shifts smoothly and in all positions where else can this thing "slip" ? Thanks alot I gotta get to bed Santa's commin and I know he aint bringin one of these ! I'll look for a pic if the controll and post it.... THANKS !~

Re: Bayliner Trophy engine Controll Question....

We kinda need to know what you have for a motor. Could be a Force or a Johnson depending on the year, or it could be an OMC Cobra if it's a sterndrive. If it has a Force motor, it would have a US Marine surface mount control with the key in that box, or a Morse built-in control with the key in the dash. If it's a Johnson, it would have an Morse control with the key in the dash. If it's a Cobra, it has a Morse again with the key in the dash. A Force motor would either be white or blue. Johnson would probably be gray, and so would a Cobra. MerCruisers are black, but I don't think Bayliner used those in the 80s.

If you look at your registration card, that will have the year. It's also part of the vin number on the rear right of the boat on the transom. The last digits will give you the month and year manufactred. If the last digits are 987, it was built in September of 1987. If there's a letter before the last two digits, A would be for October, B for November, C for December (or something similar).

Basically I would say that either the handle has slipped out of position on it's pivot, or there's a cable problem.

if Neutral isn't where it used to be, it could be your shift cable is in the process of failing.

If it is your shift cable failing then you should replace it soon. I've seen a couple of times where someone was coming into the dock, the cable lets go, they move the handle into reverse and when nothing happens they push harder on the handle and fly forward into the boat ahead of them. Not a nice thing to happen...and a natural reaction.

anyway I'm going to try and get another pic of the controll tonight. The boat is an 84' and the engine is a volvo 250 with a 280 outdrive. It just really seems to me that somthing slipped in the controller itself.....

I had a 85 trophy and had the same thing happen also thought the control was at fault, it was'nt , replaced the shift cable and all was better.
