I have a baystar steering system on my Sea Pro 180. There is a leak from the base of the helm pump. The fluid runs down the outside of the console to the floor. I have replaced the o rings under the steering wheel but the problem still exist. I do not see any leaking from the o rings on top. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem if so what did you find out where the oil is coming from. Any information is appreciated.

I have a seastar system and had a slight leak from the fill tube which goes from the helm unit to the fill port on the dash of the console. All it took was a new clamp and it went away. I don't know if yours has the fill port directly on the helm unit, or if you have a remote fill port so this might not be applicable to your unit.

I have a Baystar steering system also and had the same o-ring leak problem. It is common. I replaced the o-ring set however there was a lot of fluid collected beneath the helm unit and it continues to leak out slowly. Since the fluid level is steady now I know that the helm no longer leaks. I made a terry cloth "headband" to go around the base. I figure it will soak it up until it stops oozing out. I did not want to flush it with solvent for fear of damaging the console or helm. The only other solution is to remove the helm unit and clean it out.

It might sound odd, but have you tried an o-ring on size up. It is possible the the nipple may not be seating on the o-ring and that a thicker one might fill the gap.
