If the bearing buddy is spewing grease it is either damaged or it's not a true Bearing Buddy. Not all devices that look like Bearing Buddies are really Bearing Buddies.

If you overfill them, they can sling grease all over the place. That's why they have the covers. If yours are so deteriorated that the covers are rotted, it probably wouldn't hurt to clean, inspect, and repack the bearings anyway. Heck, for an extra 20 bucks, might as well get new bearing buddies so you don't need to worry about it.

Here's a link to their web site: Lots of good information. http://www.bearingbuddy.com/index.shtml

Are you referring to the vinyl "cap" that goes over the outside of the buddy? If so they are referred to as a Bearing buddy bra and available in ALOT of places (an Internet search under that name will give you a bunch of places). I got mine from Northern tool + equipment. Just a note, mine would be bad to fall off sometimes, what I did was to run a zip tie around them (holding them tight to the buddy), it looks terrible, but it is effective.

Re: bearing buddy covers???

As you can tell by the age of the post I'm posting a reply to, I did a search on the topic first.

I noticed on last trip out that the Bearing Buddy bra's (covers) were missing. I inspected them before the trip and found them to be snug. To make it more difficult for them to come off again, or more likely, make it harder for someone to take the bra's for their own trailer, I installed some stainless hose clamps on them.

I'm a newbie so here's my simple question.

Any adverse side effects from doing this?

Thanx,

Al

Yea,
You now have an out-of-balance condition due to the clamps screw and housing.
But your in luck because the glob of extra bearing grease inside the hub will magically migrate to the opposite side of the clamp screw in order to counter balance the rotating assembly.

Re: bearing buddy covers???

I'd be careful, I had one wheel where I lost 2 covers in one summer. Everything seemed fine with the wheel and Bearing Buddy so I just chalked it up as being a strange coincidence. The next spring that bearing buddy evidently flew off on the interstate, made a hell of a mess and ate the bearings, hub and spindle. Maybe it was coincidence but I wonder if losing that cover was a warning call that something else was going on that caused it's eventual failure.

Re: bearing buddy covers???

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Yes, I plan to do a full repack in the next month or so.
I'll be checking the fit of the wheel buddies to make sure they aren't working their way off until then. Fortunately, I'm only 7 mins from the water so things can't get too dangerous in the meantime. No winter storage in Cali so I have to work it in between trips.
