Bearing Buddy, rust inside dust cap

I don't think it is normal...

I pulled the dust cap off my bearing buddy to add some grease, and there was rust.
Mainly the compression spring that pushes the grease into the bearing.

Has anyone see anything like this?

Would I be better without the dust caps?
Are the dust caps too big/loose? Clearly water (probably salt) is getting in there.

The wheels are cool to the touch when I get to the ramp (only about 3 miles from my house).

mine do the same thing, i do not use the caps, so that when i washdown i can wash them off also. you are boating in salt water, so you have to expect rust on anything that is not aluminum, or galvanized. they only way to cut it down is washdown. i know you have water restrictions.

Does anyone make an aluminum bearing buddy?

I'd be willing to pay for one ....
