How often should this be removed? A person recently told me it needs to come out for inspection/service every time the prop is removed for shaft greasing. I never heard this before. Is this an easy job, as I've never had an engine with a carrier. Why would you remove it if there isn't a problem?

you wouldnt. its baloney. the only time you would pull the carrier is to get inside the gearbox. that being said sometimes when you need to get inside the gearbox a corroded carrier isnt going to pull out easily. keep on top of your oil changes and any line that may get caught behind the prop and you should get a long life from that gearbox.

merc runs the same design and reccomends a yearly puling and cleaning. in salt water I reccomend it at least every 3rd season. the corrosion can build up between the carrier and the case and split the case. very common on older yams and mercs
