The manual shows a bearing just above or pressed into the pinion gear at the bottom of the vertical drive shaft.. Is this referred to as the "lower bearing"? Is it supposed to be pressed into the pinion gear or ride above it. The motor is a Starflite button shift and I'm wondering if this model is worth trying to save. Power Pack/head is supposed to be fine according to the previous owner.

In answer to my own question - apparently the bearing in question is pressed into the housing from the inside the propeller/lower gear housing. The vertical drive shaft goes through this bearing and then the pinion gear is placed/lock nutted on the end of the vertical shaft. It must be very tricky to first of all get this bearing out and secondly to press a new one in.
