Bearing/Seal Question

Stupid question, but I want to make sure I'm doing this right.

I'm in the process of replacing the hubs on my LoadRite trailer. When I press the seal onto the back of the hub, do I press it on until it's flush with the back of the hub? I've still got about a 1/4" gap between the seal and the bearing. Or do I press it on until is makes contact with the bearing? If I do that, the seal will be recessed about 1/4" into the hub. On my old hub, the seal is flush with the hub but the bearing was shot so I can't tell if there was a gap between it and the seal.

Thanks in advance!

Usually you press it in until it's flush unless there's a groove worn in the shaft in which case you want the seal to go past the groove.

I agree with what marc c said. Normally you use a piece of wood to pound on to drive the seal in until it's flush. If I understand you right regarding the 1/4" space it goes away when everything is reassembled.
