Bearings in upper drive -Alpha one

I'm replacing all of the bearings in my upper drive and it is completely disassembled. I have a complete set of bearing cup drivers from mac tools and none of them fit the outdrive bearning cups. they wil only fit half way in the race and i'm afraid of damaging the race. do they make a bearing hub driver to fit these odd sizes or what do you all use.<br /><br />thanks

Mercruiser makes bearing cup tools for almost every bearing used in their drive.

Nothing like the right tool for the right.<br />But sometimes I have used the old<br /> bearing cup,sockets,pipes,etc.<br /><br />Also if you put the cup in the freezer (15 to 20 minutes minimum) and gently heat the housing (propane is best),things go a lot easier even with the correct tool.<br /><br />DHP

Ayuh,... The Freezer Trick Always Works.... Couple taps with a brass punch,+ they'll almost Fall into place...........

How do you plan on setting gear heights on the drive gear and driven gear? That takes special tools also.

Don<br />I've allready ordered and received the two shim tools. I've got all of my bearings and races and a lot cheaper than mercury prices. I ordered them through the companys bearing distributor and give them the numbers from the old bearings and hubs. the complete set that it takes and there all timken bearings. the total price was only $78.00. but I did have to go to merc dealer and buy shims and a couple of gaskets which was $112.00. it is a shame parts has to be so high for a couple of gaskets. <br />thanks<br />Ron
