Oh my goodness! My Mom and I had such a sweet time enjoying the sights and people of that beautiful river and valley. Only one complaint... the sun was with us the day we landed in Cincinnati(sunny and 80 degrees) but didn't follow us up the river to Pt. Pleasant,W.V. or back in the 8 days on the river and then came out back in Cincinnati. But oh what beautiful colors and such friendly people. Being on the water... oh... heaven! All the trees and beautiful scenery.. oh.. absolutley perfect. If you didn't get snow I'd be tempted to move there. You all truely live in a beautiful part of the world.
Bassy

Hey Roscoe,
I know it took awhile. Back at work and teaching has been so busy since I've been back(One week). Trying to make up meetings I missed while I was barging and catch up.
Yep, pictures should be ready Monday. And yes I'll be sure to post a few.
I could take up quite a few lines with all the experiences we had like:
Touring a bourbon distillery in a dry county? The Buffalo Trace distillery in Frandkfort,Kentucky(What's up with that?).
Winning a 2nd and 3rd from betting on show for every race at the Keeneland race track(should have bet more, heh?)
Learning all about the flooding that happens all along that river(Even the 1997 flood,Wow!). Now I know why they call it Mighty!(But why do people still build these beautiful homes right on the river? Crazy? Loco?)
Learning all about the Underground Railroad happenings along the Union/Confederate lines there. (Very interesting). I didn't know any of that before.
Learning that the Ohio River doesn't even belong to Ohio(What's that all about too?)
That's just a start!
Bassy

Re: Beautiful Ohio River Valley

Welcome back Bassy! Happy to hear your safe return. Even more happy you enjoyed your trip along our Great River.

The Iroquis Indians called the river "Ohio". The French translated the word into the "Beautiful" or LaBelle Riveria...hope the French spelling is right. It certainly is that...when she's calm.

The underground railroad was as far north as where I live. Lots of history here during the Civil War. Fact is, the Confederate General Morgan made a raid just above where I live...wasn't much of a raid as he spent most of his time trying to get back south without getting caught....which he eventually did.

Had to chuckle on your comment about why people still build their homes along the banks when it's so flood prone.....well, why do folks still build their homes in hurricane prone Florida? Who knows? The last two floods we had, last September and January, were worse than the 97' flood. But we live with it and go on with life.

Anyways....glad you had a great time. Come on back anytime. What ya'll need to do is start at Pittsburgh next time and see some my "neck of the woods". Can't wait to see the pics.... :)

Yeah and why do they build out here in the hills where its such a fire hazard? Yeah, I understand. Thanks.
I wasn't aware you had such flooding last year. Wow! Speaking of flooding we also had a man come on the barge and show us a slide presentation on the 1937 flood. Wow! 1 month of rain and all that water. Just amazing to me! I also enjoyed the murals on the flood walls at Portsmouth and understand other communities are doing that too. Beautiful!
Hey, why are there not more floodwalls along the river. I mean one town will have them and the one next door doesn't? Expense?
Bassy

Re: Beautiful Ohio River Valley

Floodwalls depend on elevation of the area, what kind of flood plain it is and the local geography. Sometimes they help.....sometimes don't.

And a lot of floods are caused by quick snow melt or hurricanes still carrying a load of rain as was the case last Sept. and Jan.

Never dull along these muddy banks.... :)

I can see that. Never bored along the Ohio River.
We talked to people in Ripley who just move all their furniture upstairs during the flood and then moved it back downstairs after the water leaves. Sounds funny at first but then after a few minutes of considering it its not such a bad idea. Just a different way of life is all. I enjoy things like that. How others deal with loss and difficulties. Did these people complain or whine? Nope not one bit. I just loved that!
Bassy

The murals on the flodd wall at Portsmouth is about the only nice thing in that town! We spent the night there on our trip from Louisville to Pittsburgh, in 1999.

Keeneland, huh? I was there a couple weeks ago. Maybe we ran into each other and didn't know it! I wasn't there long, though - way to crowded for me. I was boating on Lake Herrington, on the Dix river.

Yep, the Ohio Valley is beautiful. You are right about that.
