NEW YORK -- Two teenagers have drowned in the Bronx River, where they had gone swimming near a waterfall close to the entrance of the zoo.

Police say the 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were pulled from the river on Sunday and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

They were not identified.

Police say the teens were swimming near East 180th Street and Boston Road when they were overpowered by the current of the 23-mile river, which cuts a southward path through the Bronx.

The fire department says first responders were called about 3 p.m. Police officers, firefighters and civilians pitched in to help rescue the two teens.

Just saw this on the News.........what were people on the street saying about it?

"The signs that say no swimming are NOT enough! The city should build bigger fences!"

3 or 4 people said the same thing!! On TV! God I wanted to reach through the tv and smack them!!!

BIG RED SIGNS say NO SWIMMING!!

Those signs are about as useful as the (not engine topics) notice on the boat forum.

A lot of folks look right at them and don't see them; a few read them but are too lazy to go find the right forum.

We must move 8 or 10 engine questions a day out of there to the correct engine forum.

I believe in allowing the Darwin principle to take control. If someone is too stupid to read and obey a sign (and there is always a picture to go with the words, so don't tell me about illiterates) then I say 'let them die'! How much money will have to be spent to save people who are not worthy of being saved?

The fence was so high the cops had a hard time getting over it.

Doane's falls in Royalston Ma is one of those places where kids kill themselves on a regular basis. The state has a sign with all the newspaper articles through the years of kids drowning. They still jump off the bridge over the falls.

The signs are as useful as the notice on the pack of cigarettes that smoking can/will kill you. People still smoke.

Some people are just stupid and signs aren't going to help stupid.

I blame the auto industry, They have made cars so safe now that the stupid people live through their stupidity. Its not all their fault, but it started with seat belts.
A good steel dash board and no seatbelt law keep the gene pool healthy.

I am unfamiliar with the area that this occurred in, but I'm just looking at it from a different standpoint;

What if the city did something in a nearby area that made it safe to swim in, or there was a public pool nearby? Create an alternative swimming area (if at all possible), that didn't include risk of life? I'm in Florida, and there is water all around us. Some is safe to swim in, and other areas not so much. The unsafe areas are marked, and I've never seen or heard about someone swimming where they shouldn't (although I'm sure it happens). I think if there are no safe alternatives, people (especially teens) will take risks, which sometimes have horrendous consequences. Folks here have alternate places to go, so why risk it?

These two teens were (most likely) inner-city kids looking to escape the heat. Teens aren't smart, take chances, and feel invincible. They weren't the first, and they won't be the last to tragically die in this area.

yeah they should builde taller fences with razor wire on top. that way the parents could either sue the city for cutting precious up or maiming them in a fall from heights. now all they can do is sue mother nature for having to powerful of a river.

who knew water could kick your butt?

i think there's getting to be to many restrictions and safety items being addressed. there's no way your gonna protect all the people all the time. someone will always figure a way around the rules.... so i'm pretty much with achris.

Warning signs are equivalent to putting locks on your doors.

I work for DOT in the traffic division. We are constantly being mandated to change the design of signs that "some people" find difficult to understand. Someone might not be able to read this one...make it a symbol. This symbol isn't clear enough...redesign it. On top of that, there are more and more signs being put up in areas that "common sense" tells us..."don't do that".

Here is an example of one we just had a request for. (You guys will like this)
A large 36" wide by 24" high white background sign that said at the top in red "WARNING". Under that in black "ramp may be slippery". Yep, you're right. They are to be placed at the end of two boat ramps that someone slipped on, in the water, and is trying to sue for not being warned it might be slippery.

So it, in my opinion, makes absolutly NO difference what type, size, or color of sign you put up. People are going to do what they want no matter what. The only thing those signs do is limit the liability of whichever governing body from ambulance chasers and protect the tax payers.

And then there are those who think that sign is there for everyone BUT them.

Just a minor cleansing of the gene pool. You know what they say about a boat full of (lawyers, idiots, etc) that sinks to the bottom of the ocean? Good start!

.

Here in Michigan we have signs telling us not to pass with oncoming traffic present. How is that for common sense?

You just added one extra vowel to bread is all. I am sure it was just a typo.
