I'm getting ready to rivet the cap back down and was wondering what is the best bedding compound to seal the cap.

I was thinking 4200, but is there anything more economical that will do just as good a job. (like anything about boats and boat repair is economical).

FWIW, I am dealing with a shoebox joint if that makes a difference.

I have used plain silicon caulk for tanks that had the same seams. The tanks are only two years old though and contain fresh water. I can't tell you if there is corrosion under the caulk. I have also used Formagasket Number 2 (a Permatex product) on iron, aluminum, plastic and glass containers holding all sorts of product with no corrosion under the material after many years. The advantage and dissadvantage of Formagasket Number 2 is that it never really hardens. After you rivet your cap on you will have to clean up the excess with alcohol, otherwise it will stick to anything that comes into contact with it for years.

I would think formagasket would be a bad idea for a sealant. I use it on gaskets to help seal engine components. It works great for that kind of work.

pl is an out door construction adhesive.....it could be cut by inserting a sharp knife between the cap and the hull......but for the most part it would be permananent....so permanant you could probably for get the rivets....

its really underrated in boat building.... td uses it on a lot of his stuff

PL Concrete crack and mortar sealer is basically identical to 3M 5200 except for color - it's more flexible than construction adhesive, and costs about $5.50 a tube. Yes, they're pretty permanent.

But, they're not impossible to remove.. some folks have reported success by getting a scraper or fishing line under the edge and cutting the material.

If it was me I'd either use 4200 at $9 a tube, or the PL crack stuff.

Erik

PS: Of course, the last time I did this was with 5200, before I discovered the PL stuff.
