Beer keg as an air tank?

My 6 gallon compressor just isn't getting the job done. I think I want to just get a bigger tank and connect it with the old one. I can get an old 15 gallon beer keg for $10, might I be able to use that as an air tank? Does anybody know how much pressure there normally is in a keg? Are there any standard size threaded fittings on the keg? I would like to avoid welding it...

I wouldn't do it, compressed air or any gas can be very dangerous. I doubt if kegs ever see more than 10 psi, your compressor likely puts out 80- 150 psi. If the keg fails it won't be a small thing, it could be very dangerous. Unless you can find pressure specs on kegs, I wouldn't bother with it. Air bottles are relatively cheap as well.

I saw a beer keg once used as a fuel tank ,which i thought to be odd considering the weight, but as a compressor air tank?,i have my doubts.

I think you are getting good advice! Ive heard Old propane tanks work ok for this though! You might check this out though!

I can tell you from my fatherinlaws experience not to use a water tank!! He plumbed an upright water preasure tank to his air compressor, (Capable of 175LBs)! Turned it on and went inside to eat lunch! Heard an explosion and got outside just in time to see the tank land in his front yard! Launched like a rocket and went right through the roof of his shop! Lucky knowone was killed!

LubeDude

Compressed air is extremely dangerous. Take a look at the big commercial jobs. They have all kinds of cages and hardware stuffed around them.

I wouldn't use a propane tank either.
The off chance you mistake the air/propane tank with a real tank with propane?... News at 11.

Air tanks are cheap compared to your safety.

H.
