Hi guys

Questtion for ya, yesterday I fired up my '77 Mariner 85 hp and everything was well. Today I I fired her up and there was no water flowing from the telltale, but there was yesterday.

So I ran the garden hose through it and water flowed out of the intake, so no clogs. Is there anything else I should try before I pull the lower unit and replace the impeller? Seems silly it would just go like that? Ther impeller was replaced as of last year per PO but I dont think it was used since then.

Thanks in advance
Jeff

your impeller is probably fried and yes they can go that fast, especially if its been that long since it was run

Dude. You live in Detroit. You can't be more than 10 miles from a Merc dealer. take your serial number to the dealer and buy one.
9/10 Mile road St Clair. 5 mile and telegraph..

Jeff, Those telltales clog easily. Why not fire her up on the flusher and see if water exits the grates above the AV plate and thru the prop.

Re: Before I pull the lower unit....

We pulled it yesterday and replaced the impeller anyway and sure enough it was bad. Funny thing was I noticed the problem when I was collaborating the tach. Turns out the tach was bad also... So I bought a new one also, well the new one was shot too! So after a 3 trip to the store I finally have a working motor and tach! Figures I'd have all these problems the first day we were going to take the boat out lol.

Re: Before I pull the lower unit....

I just acquired a 75 7.5 Merc outboard which has been sitting in a basement for 15 years. Impeller would have been fine but I replaced it anyhow. Not to say that many don't go bad fairly quickly, but this one didn't. :p Make sure you get the water tube seated properly into the engine. Otherwise the water doesn't make it into the cylinder jacket and just washes out your lower unit...
