Bell Housing corroded Alpha One Gen 2

Decided to do Gimbal / Bellows job on my old 1991 Apha One Gen 2. After removing the Bell Housing, I noticed there is a corroded hole in the unit. See the photo. As far as I can tell, exhaust must be escaping through this hole. QUESTION: Do I need to replace the Bell Housing. The replacement part is expensive. Can I run the unit with the hole without creating further problems? I am a fairly new boat owner (2 years), but I am mechanically handy.

That's not in the exhaust cavity, or shouldn't be. It started life as a 1/4" hole for the keeper for the speedo pick tube. Obviously it's 'grown' a bit... Given the condition of the rest of that bell housing, I'd be replacing it...

Thanks Chris. However, when I look at replacement Bell Housings (OEM Quicksilver/Mercury Alpha Gen 2 Bell Housing Assembly 806031A 2) - I do not see any speedometer pick tube connections or taps(?).

the speedo hose is in the trasom housing and connects to the lower unit
and left a message about a replacement housing

If I use this old bell housing, am I only compromising the speedometer? Basically, can I use the old housing? It is an old bow rider, so I want to avoid expenses that are not mechanically necessary. Thanks.

Can I use some JB Weld on the hole and form a 1/4” hole to help enable the speedometer? I know this is a cheap fix.

Ok. Chris ... I finally figured out what you meant about a “keeper for the speedo pickup tube”. The 1/4” hole you are referring to is for anchoring the speedo tube which the attaches to the lower unit. Correct? So, the cheap (but not advised) fix is to cover the hole with JB Weld and make another hole to attach the the “keeper” plastic piece.

Yeah patching with jb may work. I'd be replacing the housing, but I get they are expensive. The housing you have needs to be sandblasted and painted properly. It still would be ugly. I've been scrounging parts for a few years, have a spare myself. Look around ask, ask friends and check e bay, craigs list whatever it takes and find a doner boat or parts where ever you can find them for a lot cheaper. Sometimes ya get lucky.

FInd a used one and dump that one. It is going to fail, maybe spectacularly. They are often on eBay or CL.
