Okay, one step at a time. Outdrive is off. (celebration is now over)
Now I'm trying to figure out how to remove the dang bell housing. Using the manual and on Mercstuff.com I can't figure it out. It refers to a hinge pin and a special tool required, but on older units. (Mine I assume, 1969)it requires a different special tool. I'm on step two and I am needing special tools to proceed. I can see where this is no big deal if you have the tools and know what your are doing, but I'm about to go out and beat the dog or something.

I don't see any hinge pins.
Anybody want to buy a nice 1969 Glastron that needs a little outdrive maintenance?
(that's a joke.)

Hey..... 3X7.....
Just Why,+ Where are we headed with all this outdrive removal ???????
Just Wondering........
I don't see any hinge pins.
Well...........
They're Right Where it Hinges........
Probably have a couple of plastic caps over them or something.......
1 port-side, 1 starboard-side.........
Right where the Gimbel Ring,+ Gimbel Housing Meet...........
Which Tool do you Need ??
6-point Hex, or the Torx style ???
I can see where this is no big deal if you have the tools and know what your are doing, but I'm about to go out and beat the dog or something.
Even With the Tools ,+ Knowledge ,
I've been ready to Beat the Dog....... And the Neighbor's Dog.......... :D ;)

Re: Bell Housing Removal

Your neighbor must have a dog like my neighbor does. If he (the dog) craps in my front yard one more time...

The pins are apparently covered by the housing that is attached to the transom. They really aren't visible.

My reason for tearing it all apart is to replace everything I can that is rubber that might have been causing it to take on water with the outdrive raised.

I don't know Bondo... I guess that's my main problem, I just don't really know what I'm doing. I have already learned a lot (believe it or not) from you, and from just doing it. But I may have to learn in stages. I might have to pile it all up and go to a mechanic and just tell him what the problem is and just tell him to fix it.

I feel pretty stupid right now.
3X7

OK....... It's becoming Much Clearer Now..........
You're No Dummy........ Just grab those Craftsmans,+ Git To It..........
Turn the Steering Wheel, All the Way to 1 side or the Other.........
Then Look where I told you........
They're There......

By the time you get to the Drive Bellows,
That Poor Dog is going to be Dead.........
And,
You Won't have a Knuckle without a Scab on it......................... :D

Re: Bell Housing Removal

hello
your old style hingepins are pinned in place. the little nail head looking buggers. if you can get a small chiesel and work them out there is a tool that does not work well that thredas into the hinge pin and threads on a slide hammer. worst case you will have to drive the pins through and hope nothing breaks. I wont work on the old ones anymore due to the corrosion locks everything together.
good luck and keep posting

for pressed in pins, the seloc manual says you need a c-9-134569a1 slide hammer, and c-91-36060 hinge pin puller.

Re: Bell Housing Removal

Sorry I have not responded. I have been away from the computer and not much time to look at the boat. But I did have time to go out and turn the wheel - there you have it. Just like you said, Bondo. I can't believe something so simple as turning the wheel did not occur to me.

Rodbolt: I did see the nail head looking buggers too. and Hoot I read about the slide hammer and hing puller - Here comes more of my ignorance.
What is a slide hammer. I can sort of imagine what a hinge pin puller is, but a slide hammer sounds like something I should have learned about when I was in band. (I didn't learn much of anything when I was in band.) I've always liked the sound of a good slide hammer, but dang they are hard to march with during marching season. Are they percussion or brass. Okay, enough fun with that.

I've been letting the dog rest up. I have a feeling he's going to need plenty of rest.
I bought a copy of Clymer's Mercuriser manual.
How does that compare to Seloc?

So in summary I have four questions.

1. What is a slide hammer
2. Do you know an estimated cost of a slide hammer and or hinge puller
3. Where would you recommend I get them? Or can I make it without them?
4. Do you have a preference for Seloc or Clymer?
And if so, why?
