I'm getting ready to install my new bellows on my old #1 drive.'76 model 140. I've got quicksilver bellows glue & powertune. I have two questions.
1) which way to install u-joint bellows? New one only has one ground clip on one side of one end. It also has kind of a flat spot on one side right after the clamp in the first fold. Old one has two of these flat spots (180? apart) on that end which I believe was the transom side.
2) where to use the bellows glue as I've read 12 different thoughts on this & I guess a 3rd question is in what order is best to reassemble them? Transom side first or bell housing & exhaust first or u-joint? Thanks guys. Jim.

First, you don't need Powertune for pre-91 bellows. That only for the bell-housing end of the Gen II...

Second, what brand of bellows (Sierra, Merc, GLM....)? If it's anything but Merc, you are going to have trouble.

Bellows adhesive gets put on the sealing surfaces of both end of the bellows AND the surface on the transom housing and bell-housing that the bellows will seal on... ie, you coat both surfaces of where the bellows goes.

Next, which manual are you using? The Merc genuine is VERY clear on how to do the job....

When you say going to have trouble, do you mean trouble getting them on or trouble with them staying on? They're supposed to be Sierra bellows. I've got a manual ordered but it hasn't arrived yet but I guess I'll wait until it gets here to do them.

The non-genuine are far harder to put on and don't last as long. I used non-gen ONCE.... Took three times the time, and I've done plenty... Using genuine I can do a bellows and a gimbal bearing in under an hour.

The manual, genuine?

Thanks achris, yes the manual is a mercruiser manual but I just ordered it & it hasn't arrived yet. I tried the download version on here but it says I'm not authorized to access that page & to contact a moderator. Or am I doing something wrong in my attempt to download it? Thanks again. Jim.

Make sure with the adhesive that you let it setup before putting the parts together.

Thanks Eric & Thumpar. That's a good idea bspeth. I've looked at some on u-tube but they weren't very good videos.
