I would like to change the belt. What is the best way to support the engine to lift it enough from the mount. I have considered a chain from the rafters for support and a hydrolic jack. Is there a secret to doing this without putting the hull in danger?

DO NOT risk jacking the engine up against the hull. You are best off to lift it-slightly.

Here's a tip. While you have it lifted leave another new belt looped around the engine mount.

Oh man, I love that kind of advice. That is a GREAT tip. I don't think I would have ever thought of that! That is some heads-up thinking.
jerry

Sailor,

When I say "lift it" I really mean just hold it in place while you remove the mount.

I just replaced the belt on my IL6. I was going to support the engine before I removed the PIECE of mount but I didn't need to. Realize you do not have to remove the entire mount. There should be a spacer on the port side. If you remove it you can replace the belt. When I removed the 2 bolts holding the spacer, there wasn't any pressure on the bolts so I didn't even bother supporting the engine. The entire job took less the 15 minutes.

This all sounds good to me. So, from what I get from this, when I remove the bolt,I can remove the spacer and the engine will not drop? So the weight of the engine is not really on the mount?

DJ - I'm with you on lifting. I will just support it from above. I REALLY like the idea of the extra belt.
Thanks

I finally got up and went out to my boat shop and took a look. Now I get it. All I could picture is the one bolt at the top of the mount. Now I see what you mean by two bolts on the port side. It never occured to me that was a spacer in there.
I did have a difficult time beliveing that they would build an engine that required practiacally pulling an engine to simply replace a belt. This makes more sense.
