Belts

I have a 1996 Caravelle with a 5.0 volvo (Ford engine). I have a belt or belts to replace. It all started when I found one broken belt. I got the replacement belt, but I am not sure about how it goes on. It is the belt that drives the alternator and the water pump that brings the water into the motor. I have three place on the pulley coming off the engine. I assume I had one belt to go around the alternator, water pump and the engine. The belt I have will not do this. I searched high and low for another belt that may of broken, but found none.

After all that. Do you have one belt for the water pump, on the lower right side of the motor, the alternator and the engine. or do you have two belts one to the alternator only and one to the water pump only. I really do not think that is the case, but for the life of me I do not know why the belt will not fit. Even with the adjusting the alternator.

Any suggestions are really appreciated.

Have you looked in the maintenance manual?
The Mercruiser belt number for my engines use the last six (I think) numbers that Gates (belt manufacturer) use.
Look up your belt number at one of the online parts web sites.

I have the old belt, that I got the number off of, but the belt is not large enough to go around all three.

I have not looked in a manual, I was hoping that I would not have to buy another one. The one I purchased online last year is not the best. I am not sure which one it is, it is at home and I am at work,

The belt in the back goes around the power steering, circulating pump and engine pulley. The middle belt goes around the bottom engine pulley and the raw water pump (but you have to remove the upper ciculating pump pulley to get it on. do so with the other belts on to keep the pulley from turning and re torque the four bolts to 20 ft lbs and use blue locktight) The front belt goes around the alt, engine and circulating pulleys.
If you have an "HU" model engine you should get volvo manual #7788856-8, stay far away from clymers. You can get the belt part numbers from the store at iboats web site.

You have have worn out belts and broken belts, I would bet your pulleys are also very rusty. They will grind away belts in very short order.
If they are rusty, remove them, clean and paint the pulleys or replace with new if they are too bad. Then put on new belts.
