The float level doesn't regulate the rpms. It must be set as follows.

Check the compression. Getting strong spark on all cylinders? S/Plugs fouling out? Engine been sitting for quite some time (fouled carbs)?

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Compression is 65 each but the top piston will hit a j4c plug so I've been using j6c as they are a little shorter and they have been working great they are dry and I just rebuilt the carb. New points coils condensers wire and pumping the primer doesn't help nor removing the hood

You don't say what engine you're speaking of or what kind of problem you're having.

However.... on any Evinrude/Johnson engine, if the piston is hitting the spark plug, especially a J4C plug, the first thing to do is to remove the cylinder head as something is vastly wrong.

(Piston Play Check)
(J. Reeves)

This procedure will tell you if there is any wear or play in the Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bearing, or Connecting Rod to Crankshaft area.

Remove the spark plugs. Insert a screwdriver, dowel, punch, or some object of your choice through the s/plug hole and into the cylinder/piston area. Hold the tool lightly against the top of the piston. Turn the flywheel by hand, bringing the piston up to top dead center, then continue turning the flywheel to pull the piston down about a inch..... all the while holding the tool lightly against the piston top.

Now, at the point whereas the piston has been dropped down about a inch, grab the flywheel and hold it firmly. Now, push that tool solidly and firmly against the piston top.

If the piston moves without moving the flywheel, there is a problem (wear, play, clearance, etc) somewhere with the items mention in the first sentence. Be sure to check all of the pistons/cylinders.

Re: Bend float up or down for top end?

what motor is it? Model #?

someone could have shaved the head or block at some point.... seems like if you have enough slop in the piston rod-bearing assy to allow the piston to hit the plug...youd hear that thing knocking while running. or maybe someone reathreaded the spark plug hole!!

its amazing sometimes how people see one thing as being so important, and not the real important thing....ie

carb float adjustment VS piston hitting the spark plug!!

......and here i thought that pistons hitting plugs was a special feature on some engines....automatic plug gapping option!;)

Sorry guys been working late. Its a 65 9.5 johnson. Mc11. It ran great like that last year is why I didn't think it was the prob. It seems to vary in speed at wot just a little. Like it wants to go faster but can't. I did push on the pistons but didn't do it your way.
