1998 Volvo/GM 5.7L GS

Last night while runnin about 4000 rpm - I inadvertatantly knocked the wires off the back of the kill switch & I believe they may have touched and arched.. The boat immedieatly shut off.. I re-attached the wires and tried to crank her - she fired instantly and revved very high and immedieatly shut off - so I switched the 2 wires thinking perhaps it mattered how they were connected - turned the key - same problem. I then looked for and reset any breakers I could find (2 50's & 1 12.5) & repeated the crank revv veryhigh and die.

After a few tries when I would turn the key the starter woould just go click, click, click.

This morning I pulled put a new battery in - also I pushed the breakers harder & felt like one may or may not have clicked....

Then turned the key - it sounds like the starter is engaging & slipping on the flywheel or partially engaging & slipping..

Any ideas? Please help!!

One idea - gear teeth on starter or flywheel
stripped or broken off.

Thanks Elapso - but I was really looking for a reply like - change the oil filter.. I'm assuming that flywheel or bendix gear I'm well into the hundereds - and that's before I even address why the think dies as soon as I take my finger off the key..?? ballast resistor perhaps?

thanks again for the ideas.

Lee

Thanks for the reply - I was hopeing for something that sounded cheaper ie. You need a new fuse for the radio.. yeah right. I guess I need to pull the starter & get out the equity line checks... I assume the bendix gear would be cheaper than a flywheel...

next comes the question of why it dies the second I take my finger off the key - ballast resistor perhaps?

Cheesh - for a 1 day old boat, this one is going to be tough love.

Thanks again, Lee

1998 Larson 226LXI 5.7GS
2003 Mariah SX8 3.0 - for sale
2002 Crest 22 Sport/ 75 Merc - for sale
1982 Whaler 15' Sport - 1992 Evinrude 70 - Always runs, and runs well.

Remove your sparkplugs...Put on the hose and try to crank the engine. Does it still do the problem your having??? As was said.....High speed shutdowns can cause hydrolock.

I'll try the plugs in the morning - but given the fact that it did crank after the fact (it would only run while I was turning the key to start) indicate that it was not hydrolock?

Also - just a bit ago I went out and turned the key and the starter engaged but would not turn her over... ????

Re: Bendix slipping on the flywheel?? Help!

After reading more about hyrolock - I should give more info.
1. The bafflling for the exhaust is shot - ie. it is coming out of the back of the boat rather than the prop.
2. I got towed in about a mile with the drive down.

I guess I am back to the plugs when the sun comes up - Am I to understand that what I need to do is pull the plugs & if there is water - stand back and hit the key? then re-install and try the key?

Thanks again.

pull the plugs and if water comes out , hydroloc.
if it does not turn over with the plugs out try it with a breaker bar on the crank. it is possible the starter is jammed because of trying to start after the hydroloc. good luck

Re: Bendix slipping on the flywheel?? Help!

And please, please be careful when starting. My motor locked last summer, and this (good?) samaritan tried to start the motor...a few times.

Found out later as I suspected that over 10 teeth on the flywheel had broken off due to hitting the starter repeatedly. Cost me $1200 to yank the motor, install flywheel ($400!) and put new flappers in. This after waiting 3 weeks at the shop.

If you think the flywheel has missing teeth and the starter is just spinning in one place (with the plugs out) you can put the shifter in REVERSE and turn the prop FORWARD by hand to turn the motor/flywheel.

I just pulled the plugs - sure enough there was water in the back 2 cyl. I turned it over & pumped it out - replaced the plugs and it fired -but immedieatly shut off. ie. the second my finger leaves the key it dies... ballast resistor??

Thanks again for your help.
Lee

if you had water in the cylinders make sure you change the oil. its usually full of water when you have hydroloc.

Re: Bendix slipping on the flywheel?? Help!

I checked the oil & it was waay high - I assume there is water in there.. but first wanted to get it running.

I just dropped it at the marina mechanic and he tried aggressvily to convince me that if water was in there that I likely had head problems.. I told him i was running 50+ when it died cold & that I had been towed in - but he still felt it was extremely unlikely that it was backwash..

He is supposed to get on it after lunch & let me know where I stand - but atleast I know my starter & flywheel are ok... that's a start..

Lee

if you knocked a wire off the kill switch whilst flyin along i rather doubt your problems are due to the heads. just my thoughts due to my own similiar experiance. trying to run an engine with water in the cylinders can do damage as water does not compress and something has to give.

If you ever suspect there is water in the oil pan never I repeat never try to run it. Oil floats on water so all the water is at the bottom of the oil pan where the oil pump suction tube is and it will suck up the water. Water is not a very good lubricant for the bearing on the crankshaft and connecting rods and just a few seconds with no oil just water can lead to a very expensive engine rebuild if there is anything left to rebuild.

Buttanic
