bendix will not rise by hand

My engine started this morning. When I tried to start it this afternoon, the starter would spin but the bendix would not rise. I switched batteries to a known good one, and the bendix would still not engage. I removed my engine cover and tried to turn the bendix by hand to see if it would rise/engage the flywheel, but it just spun and would not rise (I turned it CW and CCW). Any ideas???

First thing to do is put a little oil on the shaft. Let it soak in and see if it helps free it up.

It will only go up if you turn it in the reverse direction of starter rotation.

Then.

1. Disconnect the battery.

2. Remove the negative battery terminal form the engine block and clean thoroughly.

3. Reconnect and reconnect battery.

Thanks for the help! It was stuck. I freed it up with some channel locks and then oiled it. It works great now!

A little oil on there every month or two will save you this trouble in the future.
