Bennett Auto Tab Control Questions....

I have an Albemarle 247 Express. It is fitted with Bennett trim tabs, but like any 24 degree deadrise deepvee, it is very susceptible to any weight shifts side to side while on plane. I am constantly adjusting the tabs and it's a bit of a headache.

Having read the installation instructions, the Auto Tab Control from Bennett would be a direct installation to my setup. If it works as advertised, it would certainly solve my problems!

Anybody have these and do they work as well as advertised? Wouldn't mind to hear the Bennett rep.'s opinion too!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bennett Auto Tab Control Questions....

hello
sorry to say my experience with auto tab controls has been generally poor. it doesnt work very long and becomes unreliable. grady white used a lot of them then suddenly quit. maybe the bennet rep can shed some light on this. but bennet has always been quick to send parts and tech sheets for dealing with problems.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Bennett Auto Tab Control Questions....

Albemarle247,

Of course I am biased, but I can tell you that the Auto tab Control (ATC) works as advertised. We have been manufacturing it for many years and have sold many thousands of them. The ATC does a great job of running the Tabs while you do other things, like drive the boat. It is particularly useful when the boat is running on autopilot or when someone who is not familiar with Tabs is driving. It is very easy to install and very reliable, we warranty the ATC system for 3 years and as you might know Bennett is very generous with warranty claims, even after our products are past their warranty dates.

Rodbolt, I am disappointed to hear of your experiences with the ATC. We have a great track record with the product. I am a bit confused by your reference to Grady White installing ATCs on their boats. One of my responsibilities at Bennett Marine is that I oversee all of our OEM accounts. I do not believe Grady White ever installed Auto Tab Controls on production boats. Of course it is Sunday Morning and I am having coffee in my kitchen and I can’t check my files, but I am quite sure of this. I will be seeing a couple of guys from Grady at a meeting on Tuesday and will ask them as well.

Albemarle247, I would encourage you to ask this question here and at other forums. I have seen numerous posts from satisfied owners; many how have had the ATC installed on more than one boat they have owned.

I hope this is helpful and would be delighted to answer any questions you might have.

Sincerely,
Tom McGow
Bennett Marine

Re: Bennett Auto Tab Control Questions....

I apologize for not posting to this thread earlier but I clean forgot about it! :-(

Rodbolt, could you expand on your experience with the auto system? How many have you used and how are they unreliable? Do they just quit working? Seems to me they would either work or not, not much grey area with something that is controlled with a microprocessor.

Tabman, I thought I had considered all the benefits, but letting someone else drive the boat is something I hadn't thought of. That would be great. I have no complaints with the tabs themselves, they are very reliable and work well. I am just getting sick of adjusting them and I know it's just the nature of the boat's hull, no getting around that. Given the "snotty" conditions in this area, especially the sounds and the Neuse River, it requires constant adjustment. The water is so shallow that the wind creates a very short chop and with a deep vee, trimming it out sure smooths the bumps!

I read the installation manual online a couple of times. Very straightforward and simple but it wasn't very particular where to install the unit. I would imagine that lower in the hull and centered has to be beneficial, but how about the fore and aft mounting in relation to the boat? I have all kinds of places to put it, that's not a problem.

I think I'm going to give it a whirl. It will be such an important advantage to me if it works well. Even though Rodbolt has had a bad experience and I can appreciate his comments, it is warranteeeed!

Thank you both again for your comments, I appreciate it!

Re: Bennett Auto Tab Control Questions....

Albemarle247,

We thought the very same way as you do regarding the Attitude Sensor (AC350) and that it needed to be installed as low as possible and closer to the stern, but experience as proved otherwise. Really, you can install it just about anywhere in the vessel as long as you ensure the arrow on the top of the unit is pointed towards the bow and if the unit is mounted to one side of the keel (Port or Stbd) that the arrow is parallel to the keel. Also, the unit must not be installed on top of metal. If the only place you have to install the unit is, then you will need to mount it with at least 1/2" piece of wood (or other material) between it and the metal to provide a barrier between the components inside and the metal surface.

Also, do you know the size of the trim tabs installed on your vessel? If not, please take a look and get back to me with your findings. If the vessel happens to be too far away for you to check it out, just give Albemarle a call and their TRIM TAB KIT PART NUMBER that was installed on the vessel. With this information, I should be able to check their files for the print we have on the kit!

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
Bennett Marine, Inc.
Client Services
trimtabs@earthlink.net
www.bennetttrimtabs.com
