1987 Alpha One, i was re-installing after a new cable was put on and obviously did not have it aligned in the bell housing shift cover properly and when i torqued on the 6 nuts, i stopped after i realized there was too much tension and something was binding but too late. I bent the stern drive rod where it fits into the shift cover, i straightened the tip best i could and wondering should i replace it and if so how much trouble and is it expensive?

It is on the drive, the rod that fits into little rod that moves when you shift fwd or rev.

fairly easy to replace. first, drain lube and split the drive. the shift arm that is bent is held on the upper by a stainless cotter pin, remove cotter pin and pull shift arm up and out of the hole. replacement arms are cheap. go to local marine mechanic, they probably have a few used ones laying around, may even get it for free!!
