I have a 1987 cobra 7.5L model # 984544 with a bent propeller shaft. Mechanic said you did not have to remove the drive from the boat to get the shaft off (that's all he told me). I took it off anyway to check other things. Seperated upper and lower. But, how does the prop shaft actually come out? Took the 2 retainers out, do I now use a puller to pull the bearing housing assembly out? there is a hole on the end of the prop shaft that looks like where the tip of a puller would go on
Thanks

Re: bent prop shaft

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

I also believe you can remove the propshaft without removing the lower. (I gave my service manual to the guy that bought my drive so I cannot look it up.)

If you're going to do this level or work on the drive, you should get yourself an OEM OMC service manual. I am pretty sure it indicates how to pull the shaft and if you need a specialized tool for reinstallation and setting up the correct end play/preloads etc....

Here's a great source of info on Cobras. http://www.sterndrive.info/id11.html

What kind of boat is it on?

Re: bent prop shaft

it,s a fourwinns 235 sundowner. just getting it ready to take to menominee marina, rented a slip for the first time, and found a few problems.hopefully the shaft can be straightened.
Also, nice site!

Likely not.. Just replace it..

Yes you should.. This work is way beyond the " take bolts out, put back together stuff"
