I hit a log this past weekend with my prop and bent the prop shaft slightly. It is a 1999 nissan 2stroke 30 horse. I have a couple of questions for you guys, can you have them straitened out or how difficult is it to take out and replace. The mech. that I talked to said to run it thru the season and he would fix it this fall. Also is there a place to find this part on my own. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Bill

Re: bent shaft

bearclaw,Depending of the severity and location of the bend, they can be straightened.Just insure that the finished shaft runout does not exceed .002".If your mechanic suggested running the engine before the shaft is remedied I would recommend against his advice.

Re: bent shaft

Not too big a deal.I wouldn't attempt it without being familiar with the procedure or securing the use of an engine manual.Once removed a decent machine shop or propeller shop can straighten the shaft.Had the very thing happen to me on a 83' 60 Evinrude. If you don't get the shaft straightened within the acceptible range you'll have problems with seals.

Re: bent shaft

I presume the Nissan 30 is the same as a Tohatsu. If so, all you need to do is remove the prop, drain the gearbox oil.

Undo the two bolts that hold in the gears and prop shaft (bolts located above and below the prop shaft). Slide out the entire assembly (including reverse gear).

The prop shaft can then be removed from reverse gear. You can leave the dog clutch attached to the shaft as they dont usually bend in that vicinity.

Take the prop shaft (and clutch) to your local engineering workshop and they should be able to get it spot on.

Reverse the disassembly process, fill up with gear oil and away you go.

I am not a mechanic but have done this to my 18hp Tohatsu twice now. It takes about an hour from start to end.

It costs me AUD$20 to get one straightened here in Oz.

craw
