Last summer I purchased a new 19' bowrider with 4.3 Mercruiser. When I first looked at the boat I noticed the skeg was bent, not bad but obvious if you looked. The dealer said the lower unit would be replaced and it was. Being an outboard man for 30+ years I knew almost nothing about the mechanics of an I/O. Being a do it yourself guy and after studying this forum and factory manuals for the last 6 months I'm beginning to think back on the bent skeg. There were no dings so I assume the boat was probably backed into something while the I/O was full up and starboard. I have just over 20hrs on the boat and have not had any unusual noise or vibration and probably won't until the 2yr warranty expires. Any thoughts from the pros would be appreciated.

It's just there to protect the prop. Mines mostly missing. Exactly how I got it when I brought the boat. That was ten years ago. Never had a problem. Take Bondo's advice and relax! Enjoy your boat! ;)

Re: Bent skeg

So, the dealer replaced the lower unit with one that has a bent skeg, or he did not replace it at all? I would hold him to what he said he would do.

You were an outboard man for 30 years and never bent or broke a skeg?
