IM looking to purchase a new 70-80hp 2 stroke, and could use a little advice. After searching several boards it sounds like Yamaha is the way to go, but im still undecided.

Im a little embarssed to say this, but my red and white boat would sure match up well "in the looks dept." with the Mercury.

I do realize though that reliabilty outweighs looks, and just want to make a solid purchase.

Im at the point now that searching boards on the internet has run it's course. I think my wife is going to leave me if I don't make up my mind? Says my concern for the right motor is more important than her. Hum??

So with that...any help here would be great!!

Have you considered the Evinrude E-TECH series which run from the 40hp to the 90hp? They come with a full 3 year warranty and no scheduled maintenace or tune ups for 3 years or 300 hours. There is no smoke and they are said to be quieter and smoother than the 4 strokes. You only add oil once a year on average use, they winterize automatically, and there is no changing or disposing of engine oil or filters.

Yamaha seems like the clear choice.

Johnson (Bombardier) doesn't make anything in the 70-80 hp range. :(

Honda doesn't have 2-strokes. :(

Suzuki doesn't make a 2-stroke in the 70-80 hp range. :(

Evinrude (Bombardier) makes a 75 hp Ficht. But besides the fact it's a Ficht, it's a V-4 and weighs 369 lbs. :(

Mercury makes the 75 Classic, which comes in at 303 lbs. They also have the 75 in the Optimax, but it's the heaviest of the bunch at a whopping 375 lbs.

Yamaha's 70 hp is 228 lbs. It has a reputation of being a great outboard.

So in my opinion, the obvious choice is between the Merc 75 Classic and the Yamaha 70. I vote for the Yamaha. ;)

Forktail,

Evinrude has a 75 and a 90 3 cylinder E-TECH outboard. They will be available in a few weeks according to the factory.

The V4 FICHT 75 has been upgraded to a 100hp. The E=TECH outboards are 40-50-60-75-90hp models

See my previous post.

Re: Best " 2 STROKE" to buy?? Advice??

seahorse, this guy said he needs a 70-80 hp.

I know you're excited about the E-tech's, but they're not available yet. They haven't been consumer tried. They're not consumer proven. New technology. New model year. Bombardier's fairly new to outboards, and they're continuing to go through corporate changes. How about price? Weight? Reliable? Dealer support? Besides, the only E-tech that would work for this guy is the 75 hp, which in my opinion is not a proven outboard, will be much heavier, and cost more to purchase and repair than the proven 70 Yamaha.

BTW, I assumed he could still get a 2003 model 75 Ficht (If he really wanted one). But if that model is obsolete and impossible to find, then I guess you could scratch that one too because at 100 hp it's out of his hp range.

If he wanted a 4-stroker, it would open up a whole new arena. The Suzuki 70 EFI would be an excellent choice.

Re: Best " 2 STROKE" to buy?? Advice??

My only thought is: Though I have never owned one, I do read a lot, and the best *value-per-dollar* might be the Tohatsu (assuming they make a 70 horse, and I think they do).

Middleground
I have a 70 Tohatsu, and before purchasing, I searched this sight good for tohatsu problems, and "HEY" guys there are none. :D :D :D :D

The only problem I see with the Tohatsu is dealer/service/parts. ;)

Forktail, you don't know JACK SQUAT about Bombardier or their engines....from 1999-on, the ficht engines have become more reliable than ANY other engine on the market. And, by the way, there are E-TECs floating all over the country right now as we speak. Don't bad-mouth it, unless you've got the goods to prove so....not saying there aren't good ones out there, but the "OMC" Gang is hanging tight, and bombardier will still have their fingers in it for along time to come......

Forktail, after reading my response, I must apollogize for the way I worded that.
My father started in OMC about 32yrs ago, and I guess I get protective of the brand. I now also work as an aircraft mechanic and BOMBARDIER is a HUGE leader in Buissness Aviation, and they are second to none in how they handle their corporation.
As for the other guys that posted, they are right...there are many good brands out there, and many brand-new carry-overs from the last 2 years that are near half price.
I wish you luck in your search... :) :)

Re: Best " 2 STROKE" to buy?? Advice??

Forktail....seems your right on track with my thought process. What is a 75 ficht? Saw it on your last post. I would like to go with a 4 stroke, but it would outweigh my budget, and needs.

A motor to get me from point A to point B is all I need. Most all my fishing is with the boat anchored. With a week left im still leaning towards Yamaha.

I did look at some stat's on the new Evinrued, but would feel more confidant if it had been on the market longer. I will wait and let others be the guiena pig.

Thank you for all your insight, Dave in OR.

"What is a 75 ficht?" - tyeefisher

2003 model Evinrude. Direct injection 2-stroke. Take your chances.

Walleyehed, no problem. ;)

I love Bombardier products too. I've owned so many of their snowmobiles (even raced them) that I lost count. I also have one Sea-doo and a small jet boat with a rare, odd-ball 637 Rotax in it. I do all of my own engine/rebuilding work on them. I also have a friend who keeps me in the know about Bombardier (Mario Gebetshuber who works at Gunskirchen). They do seem to have a quality product, and good support.

I really wasn't bad-mouthing the E-tech. Only saying that you probably can't get one yet, and they're all new technology, etc., so no reliability info or any info yet.

Here in Alaska waters my life depends on my outboards. I'm just not willing to take a risk on something so new. Even a good warranty doesn't do me much good if I'm 80 miles out, broken down, and drifting out to the gulf. However, if the E-tech's prove to be better than my Yamaha's, I'll switch like yesterday. After all, I do like Bombardier. ;)

Re: Best " 2 STROKE" to buy?? Advice??

If you can find a leftover 2002-2003 Evinrude 75hp FICHT, you should be able to get one for a good price. They are the "little brother" to the 90-115hp versions. They come with a 3 year full warranty, not a declining type warranty that Yamaha has.

The motor is direct fuel injected and doesn't smoke and is very smooth and quiet. It is a V4 and has lots of low end torque and minimal fuel consumption. These engines have a good reputaion for quality and dependability. You may hear folks badmouth the FICHT motors, but the problematic ones were back in '98 and '99, and then only the 150-175hp versions.

Re: Best " 2 STROKE" to buy?? Advice??

Not to argue with you seahorse, we all have our opinions. ;) But the Evinrude Ficht, as well as all brands of direct injection outboards (HPDI's, Optimax's), have not been as reliable as the basic two stroke carb and fuelies, or the 4-stroke outboards. At least they don't have a very good reputation here.

Besides, the 75 Ficht weighs a whopping 141 lbs more than a 70 Yamaha. I'm pretty sure it's more expensive too. But good point about the warranty...even though it won't help when you get stranded.
