I finally got the rebuilt 1987 motor on the boat. It is the 48hp spl., no oil injection but the builder did rebuild a pair of carbs that have adjustable main and idle? jets. The originals were not good, so replaced with rebuilt units, not sure of the year. Starts with a key flick, runs really well -- with a set of muffs -- as it is a bit nippy for water trials yet. Got a good trade on the blown Merc from a local professional rebuilder, so the pressure is off for a while.:)

I located an original owners manual for the 48, and it shows Champion QL 77CJ4 for low and normal speeds this is the old single electrode type.

It also gives a champion QL 78 V for sustained high speed use. That is a permagap design. Next range colder is what I read from this?

Questions are, are these still the best plugs to use, with all the newer designs out there, Lodge, platinum tip, Splitfire, and all the others ?? Is there a crossover list for this, and would one of the newer plug designs do a better job without having to change plugs as much.

The original designs are pretty old in comparison to what we have today, Lodge has a bunch of platinum designs that look like they would be a good improvement. Thanks for any info. on this, I can't seem to find a boater concentrated and knowing source from books.

Thanks, Cal

the best plug is the QL77JC4 gapped at .030. the 48 is a great motor. other plugs and brands, are known to cause misfires on this engine.
