OMC 3 cylinder looper. Probably the best motor ever built.

Yamaha 3 cylinder, 2 stroke, with carbs....about as simple and bullet-proof as they get....I've owned a 4HP, a 40HP, a 115HP and a 90HP now since new in 1999....never a problem with any of them....basic preventive maintenance and clean, fresh gas are the keys to their reliability.....but if these motors had been Johnsons or Evinrudes or some other I may have gotten similar good service...who knows?....I do believe that the electrical systems in Yamahas may be better than some others....Just my experience!

I remember the first year they were introduced at the local boat show. The dealer that carried them pointed out that they were almost direct copies of the OMC models of the same HP, but with better fit and finish. As I recall it was after the OP's specified year range, so that would eliminate them. Nevertheless, good motors as well.

Amen. 1987 70 HP 3 cylinder OMC rules.

Yamaha's are too new for this question; they bumped OMC off the ladder in the 90's and after in my book.

Chrysler...Maybe I should stop drinking:)

My collection is up to 63 now, but not one single Chrysler. Some years ago my friend bought one and after seeing all his problems, I wouldn't exactly rate it as reliable and fuel efficient!

chryslers are very fuel efficient; they don't burn hardly any gas when you are paddling home
